11 weeks and counting!

There’s less than 11 weeks til Sinpozium! Thank you to all those who’ve already registered and paid, and it’s only about two months until we need to finalise the booking/room size, so please register soon if you haven’t already.

It's definitely time to start thinking about fandoms you might like to pimp (or have pimped at you), discussions you’d like to lead (or ones you'd just like to suggest), games you wanna play and more, because we’re going to be looking for suckers volunteers soon. There’ll also be a little public registration form/survey we’d like everyone attending to answer, so we can get to know each other a bit before Sinpozium (and for us to get an idea of everyone’s fandoms, for planning purposes).

Please also pass the word on about Sinpozium in your own journals etc, we’d like as many Sydney/NSW/Aussie/Antipodean fans to hear about it :)

I've been thinking about games to play - do you screen episodes/movies/fanvids at all? Last year for Halloween I played Supernatural Bingo, and that was both a lot of fun, and a great way to introduce people to the show.

We wouldn't tend to screen whole episodes/movies, we find people don't tend to concentrate on just watching something for that long - not when there are so many people around. For pimping purposes, we're gonna be recommending a maximum of about 20 minutes of video. How did you play SPN bingo? It does sound intriguing :)

Fanvids definitely, meelie will be organising a vidshow throughout the weekend, plus people are free to show them as part of a pimp/discussion if they want to.

I was introducing the show to a group of friends, some of whom I knew wouldn't like it that much, so I went through the four episodes I was showing them and made a list of characters, quotes, items, places etc. Then I divvied them up randomly into bingo cards (I had enough for two cards per person), and while we watched the episodes I'd call out an item whenever it appeared on screen. So the people who didn't like the show were engaged by the bingo side, and the people who loved the show would read through their cards and try to guess which episodes I was showing by the things that were listed. A few times I had people argue with me about whether their square had appeared yet or not (one item was "bitchface", which in all honesty happens a lot more often than I had taken into account. So I had to keep saying "No, that's only a half-bitchface"). There were some prizes, mainly junk food.

I think you could make a bingo card for just about anything. There could be one for fanvids that lists tropes, song styles, fandoms, and cuts etc.

That does sound interesting - if you want to try making these up and bring them along, feel free, but I don't think its something that we'll have time to put together ourselves as a main activity this year.

Here's a question: do you have an idea of what time Sinpoz will be starting and finishing? I've booked my flights, but it'd be nice to know whether I'll be sprinting through Sydney to get to the opening ceremony on time, or if I'll have a few hours to mooch around etc.

Good question :)

We're drafting the timetable at the moment, but we're aiming to be there by 9am both days to set up, with games starting around 9:30am-10am, and then other activities to follow during the day, break for lunch around 12:30, then finish up about 6:30pm (Saturday, maybe a bit earlier on Sunday).

We're checking out some inexpensive options for dinner (if people want), and depending on what time that finishes, we may have time to hang out back at the venue for a while afterwards, but we're not gonna have anything scheduled for then.

Times may be subject to a bit of tweaking, but it should be something like that.
