Roseville Scout hall
Available
Not comfortable
One working toilet, very primative
No showers
No hot water or stove or cooking facilities/fridge in the kitchen
One table, one broken door on saw horses
We could access the dungeon, but it is even more primative

Killara Scout Hall
Not available Saturday afternoons as they have a permanent booking with the medival group who come around and hit each other with sticks. Also, on the Monday scouts will be coming in and out to get their equipment.
Perfect facilities, though. Kitchens, toilets, showers etc.

Visited, and looked on the outside. Haven't seen inside, other than Killara.

I've tried phoning the Naremburn/St Leonards place, but they are not answering any of the phone numbers given. I'll try later.

I don't tell them anything. A generic 'writers group' will do for now if they ask. I'm the one asking the questions here! (Smacks truncheon into palm).

Couldn't there be some hitting-each-other-with-sticks going on? Just to get the hall?

Also, you don't want scouts coming in and out. You know what a bad rep those little buggers have. Disgusting.

Didn't you go to a hotel one year? What about a really cheap one like the one in Chinatown me & Quill went to a few years ago?

It's only like 2 nights, right?

In the plus column you get all the facilities plus many food places including chop chop.

We did the hotel for sinpoz 3. Problems with the hotel:

1) it's expensive, even the cheapest hotel in the city is more expensive than a hall. Last year we had the cheapest hotel in the city that had a con room, and it's still expensive.

2) everyone scatters, so that they miss events, making the entire 'gathering' deal rather pointless and steril.

3) it raises everyone's expectations that this will be a real con with programmes and events etc, but since no one will help with programmes and events, everyone gets pissed off.

4) all of the expense of organising the hotel and hiring equipment and organising a convention room etc falls on one person. None of us are rich enough to carry this on the hope that eventually enough money will come in to pay it off. Erilyn did that last year and she's not willing to do that again, not having a full time job and I certainly am not.

5) if you have any complaints, run your own damned con! You don't show up anyway!

I know I'm never gonna be forgiven for not wanting to sleep on the floor of that draughty old hall! Do you remember that toilet?? And the shower? Getting pissed on by bats would be better than that! (You are in the unique position to compare the two, as it happens)

And I wasn't complaining, just trying to be helpful.

And I wouldn't go to your sucky con anyway, so there. pfftt. (picture big raspberry from my waggling tongue here.)

Of course I remember that toilet. The freezing cold made my bladder contract and I went about five times that night. In minus fifty c weather! Through the snow! Naked! Okay, not naked, I had put on every item of clothing I owned adn stuffed towels down my shirt.

That was gender preference changing cold.

That's why this year we are not planning on having it at the middle of winter. Brrrr

Anyway, now that I am back into fandom I was thinking maybe I would look in on a con or two. Ones that don't involve Siberian-POW camp-style accomodations and facilities mind.

I am saving & dieting to go to Japan at Christmas but there are some really cheap fares to Sydney these days.

You might want to consider senior citizens halls. The ones in Bankstown allow overnight renting, have kitchen and toilet facilities, though I dont know about bathrooms. For example, the cheapest one I know of hires for $16.80 an hour - that would be $403 per day, $806 for 2 days. Thats a lot I know, but divided between say 30 people, thats only $27 each. And, of course, you don't have to pay accommodation costs, you bring your own bedding. I asked Bankstown to send me a pamphlet detailing their centres. I know the one a Chester Hill very well, its a beautiful hall, but its being renovated in October and isn't available.

It has to be close to public transport, have toilets, showers, kitchen facilities, etc. Power points... close to restaurants. Shit like that.

The only one that seemed to have any hope of overnight accommodation (the St Leonards one), was so annoyed at the idea of renting it out that I didn't even want to raise the issue over the phone!

As a PS, I reckon you could charge $50, which would include say accommodation, breakfast (toast, cereal) and tea/coffee for a 2 night, 2 day, and no-one in their right mind could complain about that.
