Registration update

Sinpozium 2011 is now less than 5 months away, and we just wanted to let everyone know that things are happening, including being able to pay a deposit towards the function rooms at the Y Hotel.

We'll be opening registration in mid-February. We'll post more information at the time, but there will be a short online form to complete, plus payment of $50 which will have to be in advance, not on the day. Direct deposit will the preferred payment method, otherwise cheques/moneyorders will also be accepted. Full refunds will available until a few weeks before Sinpoz. (International attendees, we'll discuss payment options directly with you).

In mid-April, we'll start asking for volunteers (for fandom pimping, leading discussions etc) and taking suggestions about the program for Sinpozium, towards developing a timetable of events for the weekend.

Please note: If you're interested in staying at the Y, you might want to start thinking about/making plans/reservations sooner rather than later, to ensure you get the room that you're after. All accommodation is to be booked directly with the Y, we're not making a group Sinpoz booking.

Hey,

I'm wondering -- I'm completely unsure about public transport. Do you think somebody could tell me how to get from the Waterworks hotel to the Y?

Off the top of my head...I have no idea. Maybe a bus? It doesn't look very close to the a station on the airport train line? Possibly best to check with the hotel, ask them about best way to get from there to the CBD.

I'll be honest, my first thought was "are you committed to staying there?" because I'll be honest, that's not ultra-convenient, or even kinda convenient to the venue. But I'll help you figure out transport options to the best of my limited ability :)

It's the cheapest, and nicest for the price, non-backpacker hotel I've found so far. But no, I'm not completely committed to staying there -- I'm just hoping to find a cheap (100-150 per night) place that's easy to get to and easy to get to the Y from.

Hi Amy, I'm going to second Erilyn's advice and suggest that you DON'T stay there. Botany is NOT a very good area, and it's not particularly close or easy to get to and from either, particularly at night.

Have you had a look at the Y itself (http://www.yhotel.com.au/) ? Looking at the dates for the con (http://www.thebookingbutton.com.au/properties/yhotelhydepdirect?commit=Apply&promotion_code=¤cy=AUD&start_date=10+jun+2011) you can get rooms within your budget, particularly if you don't mind sharing a bathroom. The rates on the twin rooms, for example are per room, not per person,looking at the total when you get to the booking page. While we haven't inspected the rooms recently, I did stay there at the last sinpoz, and the rooms were fine if pretty basic - the only complaint was that the walls were rather thin (and that was a complaint from our neighbours, fangirls can be noisy...). It's also really easy to get to via public transport from the airport.

Thanks for that information! I've decided to make a booking at the Y -- I'm assuming your judgement is worth more than some random reviewer who said the Y was pretty gross. :)

If you then find a room somewhere else convenient that you prefer, I think you can cancel the Y room fairly easily if you give enough notice (though check the T&C, they may have changed since the last time I stayed there).

Or if you want to go a bit more upmarket than the Y, there's a Travelodge a block or two down the road, which would fit in your budget easily if you find someone to share with, or heaps of other hotels around the CBD. If you want to stay outside the CBD, I'd recommend looking for somewhere close to a train station, for ease of transport, as the Sinpozium venue is close to Museum station in the city.
