Volunteers/suggestions for Sinpoz activities

(this post is environmentally friendly and signficantly recycled from last year)

It is only two months until Sinpozium 2012 \o/ Registrations are ticking along nicely (but keep them coming please!) and it's time to think about what we'll actually be doing. We need people to lead discussions, pimp fandoms and more – so, what do you wanna do at Sinpozium?

** Fandom pimps will probably be limited to a maximum of half an hour (though if you want to do less, that's fine, and they don’t need to be fancy). We strongly recommend keeping video portions of pimps (if you wish to include them) to only about 15-20 minutes - this should be enough to give a feel for the fandom, anything longer and interest can really start to lag (always leave 'em wanting more!). If you can get a friend/beta to look over a presentation, a second pair of eyes really helps, particularly if you’re having problems trimming it.

** Presentations/videos/slideshows will be shown via a laptop hooked up to a data projector, so will need to be brought on disc/USB stick/external hard drive (we don't want to be switching laptops around if we can avoid it). A variety of file formats will be acceptable (but if it can be played by VLC, that's a good indication it will be ok).

** Suggestions for games are welcome, but from experience, they need to be simple and interactive.

** New or old, it doesn't matter - some of the most interesting fandom pimps I've seen at past Sinpoziums were for shows from before I was born, or introduce us to the hot new thing.

** Discussion topics that are multi-fandom are particularly good (as they're inclusive). Topics might range from serious discussions of writing or fannish trends, to which characters look the best in tight jeans. Lengths will be 30-60 minutes, depending on topics, number of suggestions and structure of final timetable. If someone wants to give a workshop on Tumblr and how the fuck you're supposed to use it, I would support this. Just sayin'.

** Suggestions for discussions/panels are more than welcome, even if you don't feel like leading the discussion yourself. If you're having a complete mental blank, I find reading about other fannish events and cons can really get me thinking about what I'd like to participate in.

** [livejournal.com profile] meelie will be planning/co-ordinating a vidshow during the weekend (more info to come), but you're of course free to also use vids during fandom pimps etc.

** One thing [livejournal.com profile] alasen and I were hoping to include last year but didn't end up with is a session for pimping book fandoms. Given that we can't really put together pimp reels for them, people would only need a few minutes each to talk about the book(s), and since these are often small fandoms, it can be a great way to lure more people in, or at least introduce them to a new author. Please let us know if you want to participate, and what book you'd like to talk about. PS - Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings are not eligible.

Please don't be nervous if you've never done something like this before, it's not gonna be a HUGE group of people (and no one is allowed to bite without permission), and we're happy to help if you want to do a pimp but aren't sure how to go about it. Just ask!

And remember, if you don't volunteer and/or suggest, you don't get to complain afterwards! :) We'll try and incorporate as much as possible from all the volunteers/suggestions, but the final timetable will be based on what we have found has worked at previous events and think is the best possible mix of everyone's interests. If there’s something you’d like to do that doesn’t seem like it’d fit with these guidelines, talk to us about it, and we’ll see what we can figure out.

I nominate Shihadchick to present "hockey RPF and why all your friends have abandoned you for it"

hey! SOME OF THEM ARE ATTRACTIVE! Carey Price does not approve this generalisation.

He actually usually has pretty decent hair!

...although, in semi-related news, we just found out this week apparently lots of rinks supply hair product for visiting teams. Which. LOLOLOLOLOLLLLL.

I SEE HOW THIS VOLUNTEERING CULTURE WORKS

>_<

no, but seriously, if you guys want a hockey presentation a) I have more access to HD now and b) a much better grasp on how I want to roll with "here is hockey fandom, come at us bro!"

[identity profile] alasen.livejournal.com 2012-04-09 09:41 am (UTC)(link)
YES IT IS VOLUNTELLING NOT VOLUNTEERING

I suspect a number of us would like a hockey pres. 3 is a number, right??

(ps if you would also like to do slash pictionary, that is ALSO available, but I appreciate it's a super hard job, so only if you want)

[identity profile] shihadchick.livejournal.com 2012-04-09 09:44 am (UTC)(link)
O I C.

Heee. 3 is TOTALLY a number. I would plan to tweak sufficiently that it's not too same-y for the... three or so people who would've seen v1.0 at get together, too.

And if you guys are stuck for anyone else I can throw some prompts in for you, but I'm not sure how much time I'll have this month. Though I guess I should be able to come up with prompts while watching the playoffs, soooo... but yeah, let me know!

Pictionary clues are going slowly, but going (tbh, I am prone to a last minute burst with those; I'M SURE YOU'RE SHOCKED), and I have a plan for the pimp but haven't got it totally together yet. Next weekend is for organising my shit! :D <3333

I think a fandom tech/tools panel would be fun - if someone would volunteer to do tumblr (b/c i also would like to know), I'm happy to talk about pinboard, for example (as i know this is a site people can't really see what it is without signing up, which costs $).

We could talk about podfic, ebooks, ebook readers, etc.

So if you've got a fandom-related site/service/tool etc that you'd either like to know more about, or would like to teach us about, comment in this thread! (Including any that I've listed above :D)

Sure am! Will you have internets there, or will I need to work something else out? I can do it all with screenshots or bring a mobile broadband thinger if necessary.

[identity profile] shihadchick.livejournal.com 2012-04-09 09:38 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, while I think of it -- do you guys need pictionary prompts this year?

[identity profile] blademistress.livejournal.com 2012-04-10 04:28 am (UTC)(link)
I was thinking about retooling my Community Troy/Abed to have a slightly less weird ending and maybe showing it because the opportunity to counter-infect people with Community is strong. I'm not sure if anyone would actually be interested but I've also been working randomly on this comparison between Outrageous Fortune, its American remake Scoundrels and the British version Honest in regards to portrayal of women. It's a few clips and meta discussion type stuff, but I'm not sure if anyone is actually interested in me bringing them down and the tone etc etc.

[identity profile] alasen.livejournal.com 2012-04-22 08:29 am (UTC)(link)
Troy and Abed at Sinpozium! Yes please!

Hmm, I'm not sure about your second one - I don't know how many Australians are familiar with Outrageous Fortune? (All I know is the plot line you told us that broke meelie and my hearts oh i'm sad again just thinking about it)

[identity profile] proteinscollide.livejournal.com 2012-04-10 01:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Hi...I'd like to do a Suits overview though I'm a bit nervous about putting my hand up 'cos I've never done a primer/overview before and I'm not sure if RL is going to be kind to me, time-wise, before Sinpoz. But I'm willing to try! And to procrastinate to the last minute before the date! :D

[identity profile] proteinscollide.livejournal.com 2012-05-19 02:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Hello! Yes I think I can pull together something...it'll be short and it won't be high tech but it will have pictures! And hopefully video if I can work that out...

For scheduling purposes, I'm only going to be able to attend on Saturday (like last year).

[identity profile] proteinscollide.livejournal.com 2012-05-30 12:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey, is powerpoint, and .wmv files okay? yes, i am an evil windows user... :)

[identity profile] hyarrowen.livejournal.com 2012-04-18 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
I can do short intros to a couple of books - 'The Flight of the Heron' and 'A Month in the Country' (see my rego survey answers) and I can take a few screencaps of the tie-ins.

[identity profile] blademistress.livejournal.com 2012-04-24 06:24 am (UTC)(link)
Troy & Abed it is!

[identity profile] blademistress.livejournal.com 2012-05-19 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
Yes! I'm just working on re-tooling the ending now.

Can do. I'll even bring the version that actually has sound :D

[identity profile] shihadchick.livejournal.com 2012-05-11 07:40 am (UTC)(link)
I am working on pictionary! FOR THE RECORD. :D?

[identity profile] hyarrowen.livejournal.com 2012-05-13 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
If anyone could do a user's guide to TV Tropes, I'd be interested! It's a bit like a black hole - attractive, but scary.
