Thanks to those who responded to the poll about dates. The results were basically split 50/50 in terms of preferences, and we can confirm that Sinpozium 2014 will be held at the Sydney Central YHA on Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th June.

This is the same venue as last year. Please note: this is a long weekend for most of Australia, but not New Zealand (sorry guys! hope you can still make it).

We'll open up registration soon, but in the mean time, please start thinking about fandoms you might want to pimp (or request for others to pimp), discussion topics, activities etc.

Please leave a comment or contact us at sinpozium(at)gmail.com if you have any questions.

Hello, yes, it's time to start planning already. Unfortunately, the meeting space from last year isn't available on the same weekend this year, so we're considering some options.

The two dates we're looking at currently are the Anzac Day weekend (the Friday of which is a public holiday in Australian and NZ) and the Queen's Birthday long weekend (the Monday is a public holiday only in Australia). We want as many people as possible to be able to attend, so please let us know how these weekends work for you, and if you have any questions or additional comments or can't use the poll, please let us know in the comments or at sinpozium(@)gmail.com!

The poll is posted at the livejournal community.

We mentioned this at Sinpozium, but just a reminder - there'll be a meetup at the Sanctuary Hotel from 3pm tomorrow, as it's the first Saturday of the month. All welcome, we normally congregate in the seats just to the left of the main doors. It really depends on the month, but there's generally people there until 6-7pm, if not a bit later, depending on other commitments etc.

Hope you can make it!

Thanks everyone for coming to Sinpozium 2013, I hope you all had fun, and maybe walked away with a new fandom or two...?

This post is for any followup you may have - maybe you promised a link to someone, maybe there's some media you want to share, maybe you forgot to ask a question in the q&a session.

Other than that, if you've got any questions or so forth for erilyn or alasen, please feel free to email us at sinpozium at gmail.com :)

Hope to see you all again soon, whether it's at one of our saturday meetups, or other semi-local cons like [livejournal.com profile] get__together, [tumblr.com profile] room801au or Sinpozium 2014...?

Can't wait to see everyone tomorrow (or Sunday, if you can't make it tomorrow). We'll be getting underway from about 9:30 (though we're aiming to be there from 9ish, so arriving a bit early is fine), and hopefully you should be able to come straight up - take the elevator to level 8, then up the flight of stairs to level 9, and turn right.

Draft Timetable up!
Please check out the draft timetable and let us know if:
- we've included something that you'll not be able to do (no problem, just let us know)
- if there's something else you'd like us to add
- if we've scheduled you for a time that you're not going to be available for
- if you've got any questions.

We've tried to build flexibility into the timetable (and can virtually guarantee that it will be amended a bit on the days). We aim to make sure there are plenty of breaks during the weekend, and there's time for unscheduled discussions and other stuff as it comes up during the weekend. ETA: Pimps should aim for about 30 mins, presentations/discussions for 45 mins.

A couple of things of note on Sunday afternoon: Mini Pimps is everyone’s opportunity to rec stuff without doing a full on pimp (maybe the source isn’t suited to it, or you don’t have time etc), be it games/books/comics/movies/shows etc (similar to the book rec session we had last year). Also on Sunday afternoon, Question Time builds off the tech panels we had last year, but instead of limiting it to tech, you can pick everyone’s brains (or talk everyone's ear off ;) on whatever topic of fannish interest that has been nagging at you.

Registration
We'll be there from about 9:00am, you are welcome to arrive whenever is convenient, and we won't get underway with anything timetabled until 9:30 am or so.

Registration mostly consists of getting a nametag (which we do ask that people keep on during the weekend - it makes things so much easier, especially for people who don't already know many other attendees, and for me [erilyn], cause I suck at remembering names), and getting a small refund, so make sure you check in with us [alasen] about that!

If you haven’t done the survey yet, please fill it out, it really helps us plan and gets a head start on meeting each other. If you've already completed it, why not take a look and see what other people have answered!

Dinner
We've booked some tables for saturday night, but they never yell at us when we drag a few more tables together. We have had a suggestion that we go to the vivid sydney dr who light show after dinner, though that will likely depend on weather and how everyone is feeling on the night!

Any Questions?
Don’t forget there’s some useful info on our website, but please let us know if you have questions about any aspect of next weekend – timing of stuff, timetable, food, venue, transport, whatever!

Hello!

There are only 3 weeks till Sinpozium. We're working on the timetable: please go to our pimp solicitation post and refresh your memory about what you volunteered for! If it turns out you can't present after all, please let us know. If you're still willing (or if you didn't sign up earlier but would like to now), please let us know your estimated length of presentation. Thanks!

We are also planning dinner at the Sanctuary Hotel, for both Saturday and Sunday evenings, from about 5:30-6pm. You're quite welcome to come to dinner, even if you can't make it to Sinpozium. (You're also welcome to come and hang out without eating, if that's how you roll.) If you're interested in attending, please let us know which day(s) in the comments below, so we can make a booking.

The Sanctuary Hotel is close to Town Hall Station, in Kent Street behind the cinemas. A menu is available on their website.

If you've got any questions, let us know here, by email (sinpozium at gmail.com), or twitter (@sinpozium).

We're so excited, only 7 weeks til Sinpozium, and we've had a wonderful response with 25 people registering already! And while we've had a great variety of volunteers for pimps/discussions, there's still room for more, so keep thinking of things you'd like to see at Sinpozium. Don't forget, you can request stuff, and someone else might be inspired to put together a pimp on it, or someone else can lead a discussion on it if you don't want to.

Accommodation
For people who might be looking for accommodation, in terms of someone to share a room at the YHA or elsewhere, or seeking advice/hotel recs, or whatever you need - please comment at livejournal (so any discussion happens in one location)!

(this post is environmentally friendly and significantly recycled from previous years - we like to be consistent)

It is only two months until Sinpozium 2013 \o/ While half the fun is just getting to hang out with other fans, we do like to have some semi-structured content planned in advance. We need people to lead discussions, pimp fandoms and more, so the big question is - what do you wanna do at Sinpozium?

++ Fandom pimps will probably be limited to a maximum of half an hour (if you want to do less, that's fine, and they don’t need to be fancy). We strongly recommend keeping video portions of pimps (if you wish to include them) to only about 15-20 minutes - this should be enough to give a feel for the fandom, anything longer and interest can really start to lag (always leave 'em wanting more!). If you can get someone else to look over a presentation, a second pair of eyes really helps, particularly if you’re having problems trimming it.

But we can't emphasis enough - you don't need to be a a video editing expert to do this and you don't have to do a long presentation - you can take 5-10 min to tell us why Fandom X rocks, and show us 1 clip if you want (or do a slideshow, or whatever suits the source material). Your love for your fandom is the important thing, and if you need help with technical side making some clips or something, just holler!

++ Presentations/videos/slideshows will be shown via a laptop hooked up to a data projector, so will need to be brought on disc/USB stick/external hard drive (we don't want to be switching laptops around if we can avoid it). A variety of file formats will be acceptable (but if it can be played by VLC, that's a good indication it will be ok).

++ Suggestions for games are welcome, but from experience, they need to be simple and interactive. Participation is strongly encouraged but not mandatory in slash pictionary, but no one is excused on the grounds they can't draw (that's the point).

++ New or old, it doesn't matter - some of the most interesting fandom pimps I've seen at past Sinpoziums were for shows from before I was born, take us down nostalgia lane from 10 years ago, or introduce us to the hot new thing.

++ Discussion topics that are multi-fandom are particularly good (as they're inclusive). Topics might range from serious discussions of writing or fannish trends, to which characters look the best in tight jeans. Lengths will be 20-60 minutes, depending on topics, number of suggestions and structure of final timetable. For example...
- We believe people found the tech panel last year helpful/interesting, so please comment if there's topics you'd like to see addressed (using sites, gadget recs, what are indespensible plugins/hacks etc)
- We had a fun discussion where various people pimped book fandoms/books of slashy interest, and may do it again if there's interest. Since these are often small fandoms, it can be a great way to lure more people in, or at least introduce them to a new author. Please let us know if you want to participate, and what book you'd like to talk about.

++ Suggestions for discussions/panels are more than welcome, even if you don't feel like leading the discussion yourself. If you're having a complete mental blank, I find reading about other fannish events and cons can really get me thinking about what I'd like to participate in.

++ Vidshow - more info to come later, but there will be one co-ordinated, but you're of course free to use vids during fandom pimps etc.

Please don't be nervous if you've never done something like this before, it's not gonna be a HUGE group of people (and no one is allowed to bite without permission), and we're happy to help if you want to do a pimp but aren't sure how to go about it. Just ask!

And remember, if you don't volunteer and/or suggest, you don't get to complain afterwards! :) We'll try and incorporate as much as possible from all the volunteers/suggestions, but the final timetable will be based on what we have found has worked at previous events and think is the best possible mix of everyone's interests. If there’s something you’d like to do that doesn’t seem like it’d fit with these guidelines, talk to us about it, and we’ll see what we can figure out.

We'd like to keep all the volunteering/suggestions/discussion in one place, so please comment at the livejournal post.

Sinpozium is happening again in 2013! It’s at our new venue, the Sydney Central YHA (on the corner of Pitt Street and Rawson Place, Sydney), in the function room on level 9, on Saturday 1st and Sunday 2nd June (long weekend for NZ, not a long weekend in Australia, except WA).

We hope it’ll be a great weekend of fannish fun and friends, with games, fandom pimps, discussions, vid watching and more. We will be starting to ask for volunteers/content suggestions in a separate post soon, along with posts for people looking for roommates, organising dinner on the Saturday night and a getting-to-know-each-other survey.

More information about the venue and about Sinpozium in general is available here. Please ask us if you’ve got any questions at all, either in the comments here (anon comments are welcome) or via sinpozium(at)gmail.com.

The short 2013 registration form is here, along with direct deposit payment information (please contact us if you wish to pay another way).

Registration cost is only $25 for the weekend (half the cost of 2012!!!). Registration includes the hire of the venue and equipment, but not food or accommodation. Payment is required up-front, your registration will not be confirmed until we have received payment, and attendance numbers are limited to 35 people only. Full refunds will be available until May 15th. International attendees, please contact us at sinpozium(at)gmail.com to arrange payment.

We will be crossposting all admin posts to our Dreamwidth community.

Please pimp Sinpozium to fannish friends who may be interested. We hope to see you all there in 8 weeks!

Just wanted to confirm (especially for those that need to make travel arrangements) that, as per our previous post, Sinpozium 2013 is booked in for Saturday 1st and Sunday 2nd June at the Sydney Central YHA.

We will be opening registrations soon, so it is time to start thinking about what you might like to do at Sinpoz (eg fandoms you'd like to pimp or suggest others to pimp, potential discussion topics, and other activities).

Please let us know if you have any questions!

Hey, [personal profile] alasen and I have exciting news about Sinpozium 2013. We're in the process of finalising arrangements, but while we do, we wanted to check how many people might be planning on attending this year.

The proposed dates for Sinpozium 2013 are Saturday 1st and Sunday 2nd June (please note: not the long weekend in Australia except for WA).

The proposed location is part of the exciting aspect as it is new (to us) - Sydney Central YHA! It is close to transport (Central station, buses, parking), close to food, accommodation available on site if desired, and best of all, we're hoping to halve the cost from last year to about $25 (tbc), a total bargain.

Please let us know in the comments if you are hoping to attend (or if you won't be able to, so we can be sad).

And please link people to us - we want to see new faces as well as old friends! We hope it’ll be a great weekend of fannish fun, with games, fandom pimps, discussions, vid watching and more.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask here or contact us at sinpozium(at)gmail.com

Alasen and I should be there about 9:30, stuff will get underway from 10am.

We've found a slightly closer, cheaper (especially if you book online) carpark that people might want to check out - http://www.wilsonparking.com.au/go/wilson-car-parks/nsw/175-liverpool-street (if you pre-book through Book a Bay, it's only $5.50 for the day).

See you tomorrow and/or Sunday!

It's less than a week to Sinpozium!

We've drafted a timetable - please check it out and let us know if:
- we've included something that you'll not be able to do
- if we've scheduled you for a time that you're not going to be available for
- if there's something else you'd like us to add
- if you've got any questions.

We've tried to build flexibility into the timetable (and can't guarantee that it will be followed strictly), will try to make sure there are plenty of breaks during the weekend, and there's time for unscheduled discussions and other stuff as it comes up during the weekend.

We'll be there from about 9:30am, people are welcome to arrive whenever convenient, and we won't get underway with anything specific until 10am.

Registration mostly consists of geting a nametag (which we do ask that people keep on during the weekend - it makes things so much easier, especially for people who don't already know many other attendees, and for me, cause I suck at remembering names).

There's info on the venue, travel options and more at the website.

If you have not already filled out the survey, please do so!

Presentations/videos/slideshows will be shown via a laptop hooked up to a data projector, so please bring files on disc/USB stick/external hard drive (we don't want to be switching laptops around if we can avoid it). A variety of file formats will be acceptable, but if it can be played by VLC, that's a good indication it will be ok. If you've got specific technical questions, comment here or email us at sinpozium(at)gmail.com.

FYI, the chairs in the function room are slightly padded, and rather than try to quantify this, have a picture. You may wish to bring a cushion along to increase your comfort, as desired/needed.

Please let us know if you have any questions about any aspects of next weekend :)

Only two weeks to go!

Timetable
We are working on a timetable, however, there will be some flexibility on the day, we're not gonna schedule stuff for every minute. And it's not too late to volunteer to pimp a fandom or suggest a discussion topic!

Tech panel
We've had a request to include TV Tropes in the how to use fannish tech panel, is there anyone who's familiar with the site and would like to speak about this?

Saturday night dinner
We'll be heading off to Sanctuary by about 5:30pm for an optional dinner. It is about a 10-15 minute walk from the hotel, mostly flat/gentle slope. Decent pub food, not too expensive.

Lunch options
We did a recon, and last year's map of a number of the nearby takeaway food options (plus ATMs and some other necessities) is still current. And the IGA supermarket nearby the Y is back (after vanishing last year in the few weeks between the map being prepared and Sinpozium, causing some confusion). Please note: alcohol is not allowed inside the function room, thanks.

If you have any questions about any aspect of Sinpozium (more info is also available at the website), please comment here or email us at sinpozium(at)gmail.com.

See you in a fortnight! :)

Actually, it's only three and a half weeks til Sinpozium!!!!1! And there's stuff that needs doing...

* if you've registered, please fill out this survey about yourself/your fandoms

* if you haven't registered and are planning on coming, please register and do the survey

We need to finalise the booking at the hotel next week, so please register and pay as soon as possible. If you're still hoping to come but can't commit yet, please let us know (even if you've mentioned this before, we'd appreciate an update).

Please join in the discussion here if you have suggestions/requests/to volunteer for activities/fandom pimps/discussions.

If you have any questions about any aspect of Sinpozium (more info is also available at the website), please comment here or email us at sinpozium(at)gmail.com.

Thank you!

Hello!

We will be running a tech panel at Sinpozium!

So far, we have volunteers to explain why the following are awesome and how you can get started:

* Pinboard
* Tumblr

Also, bring your ebook readers and you can show off your models and tell each other about the benefits/drawbacks of what you use to read fic.

Is there another fandom related service you'd like to share with others? Is there a service you'd like someone to explain to you? Let us know in the comments to this post!

If you'd like to pimp or discuss something else non-tech related, please let us know in the comments to this post

Other info:

>> if you've registered, please fill out this survey about yourself/your fandoms

>> if you haven't registered and are planning on coming, please register and do the survey

>> if you're hoping to come but can't register yet and haven't told us that, please do, it really helps us with planning if we've got as good an idea about numbers as possible

If you have any questions about any aspect of Sinpozium (more info is also available here), please comment here or email us at sinpozium(at)gmail.com.

x-posted to [livejournal.com profile] sinpozium - please reply there to keep all comments in the one place, thank you!

Sorry about the spam, but Sinpozium is drawing inexorably closer (holy crap, how is is it April already?) and there's stuff to be done! So we're cracking the metaphorical whip on ourselves to get organised (cause I'd probably lose an eye if I tried a real one!)

The major thing that needs doing at the moment is the call for volunteers/suggestions for content. What happens at Sinpozium stays at Sinpozium is up to everyone, so let us know what you're interested in. You don't have to volunteer, you can make requests/suggestions about presentations and discussions you'd like to see happen. We like to have at least a loose timetable prepared ahead of time, so people know what will be happening and to try to ensure everyone is included. Alasen made a useful post last year with info about doing presentations/leading discussions.

We will be organising a group dinner on the Saturday night (most likely at the Sanctuary, same location as last year), Sunday night is being considered. More information closer to the date.

The other main things that would be great are:

>> if you've registered, please fill out this survey about yourself/your fandoms

>> if you haven't registered and are planning on coming, please register and do the survey

>> if you're hoping to come but can't register yet and haven't told us that, please do, it really helps us with planning if we've got as good an idea about numbers as possible

If you have any questions about any aspect of Sinpozium (more info is also available here), please comment here or email us at sinpozium(at)gmail.com.

Thank you!

[Yet again,we're totally ripping off [livejournal.com profile] get__together with this :)]

Before we all meet (or meet again) at Sinpozium 2012, it’d be great if we could get to know each other a bit better. It really helps a lot for planning purposes, in terms of knowing popular fandoms and what people are familiar with etc. Feel free to skip not applicable points or anything you don't want to answer, of course. Last year's post is here if you want to check your previous answers :)

Please reply in the comments to this post.

Preferred name/handle: what do you want people to call you?

Alternate usernames: if you have multiple journals/pseuds/handles

Location: Feel free to skip this or be vague, as you prefer.

Current main fandom(s): what fandom(s) are you actively involved in? Whether you determine that by what you’re reading more fic in, what are you watching, what are you most attached to currently?

Other signficant fandom(s): what are your past fandoms (whether you’ve broken up with them, drifted away, or just not spending as much time on) or otherwise significant fandoms for you?

What was your first fandom?: How did you get sucked into this crazy world?

Fanworks/fan activities: do you write, vid, create artwork, do recs, volunteer in fannish organisations, participate in meta/analysis discussions?

Tell us something about yourself: what’s your favourite colour? who’s the best captain in Starfleet/your favourite Doctor? what’s the most unlikely fandom you’ve ever gotten involved in? have you ever accidentally stalked a celebrity? Star Trek or Star Wars? Beatles or Queen?

Optional pre-coded headings for your reply:

Please post your response at this entry, we'd like to keep them centralised.

It is only two months until Sinpozium 2012 \o/ Registrations are ticking along nicely (but keep them coming please!) and it's time to think about what we'll actually be doing. We need people to lead discussions, pimp fandoms and more – so, what do you wanna do at Sinpozium?

** Fandom pimps will probably be limited to a maximum of half an hour (though if you want to do less, that's fine, and they don’t need to be fancy). We strongly recommend keeping video portions of pimps (if you wish to include them) to only about 15-20 minutes - this should be enough to give a feel for the fandom, anything longer and interest can really start to lag (always leave 'em wanting more!). If you can get a friend/beta to look over a presentation, a second pair of eyes really helps, particularly if you’re having problems trimming it.

** Suggestions for discussions/panels are more than welcome, even if you don't feel like leading the discussion yourself. If you're having a complete mental blank, I find reading about other fannish events and cons can really get me thinking about what I'd like to participate in.

** [livejournal.com profile] meeliewill be planning/co-ordinating a vidshow during the weekend (more info to come), but you're of course free to also use vids during fandom pimps etc.

** One thing [personal profile] alasen and I were hoping to include last year but didn't end up with is a session for pimping book fandoms. Given that we can't really put together pimp reels for them, people would only need a few minutes each to talk about the book(s), and since these are often small fandoms, it can be a great way to lure more people in, or at least introduce them to a new author. Please let us know if you want to participate, and what book you'd like to talk about. PS - Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings are not eligible.

Please don't be nervous if you've never done something like this before, it's not gonna be a HUGE group of people (and no one is allowed to bite without permission), and we're happy to help if you want to do a pimp but aren't sure how to go about it. Just ask!
